Why Hair Shedding Can Increase During the Gray Transition

Many women notice moments where their hair suddenly seems to shed more than usual.

Seeing extra strands in the shower or brush can feel alarming, especially when hair is already changing as gray appears.

In many cases, the explanation is connected to how hair cycles behave during the transition to gray.

Gray Hair Often Changes the Growth Cycle

Hair grows in repeating phases: growth, rest, and shedding.

When pigment begins to fade and gray hair develops, the follicles may shift their timing slightly.

Some hairs may move into the shedding phase sooner while new gray hairs begin growing in.

This adjustment period can temporarily make shedding appear heavier than usual.

Multiple Factors Influence Hair Cycles

Hair cycles are influenced by many different factors throughout life.

Hormone changes that occur with age can affect how long hair stays in its growth phase.

Thyroid function, stress, illness, and significant life changes can also influence the cycle.

These factors don’t always cause permanent hair loss, but they can temporarily shift how many hairs are shedding at once.

Washing Habits Can Make Shedding Look Larger

Many women wash their hair less frequently as their scalp produces less oil and the hair becomes drier.

When hair is washed after several days, natural shedding that happened during that time may all appear at once in the shower.

This can make it look like a large amount of hair is falling out.

In reality, those strands were simply waiting to release.

Understanding What Your Hair Is Doing

Hair is constantly responding to the body, environment, and the natural aging process.

When gray begins appearing, it’s common for the hair cycle to adjust for a period of time before settling into a new pattern.

Understanding these shifts can make the experience much less alarming.
